Emmerdale gay plot tops poll

The storyline in Emmerdale involving Aaron Livesy (Danny Miller) struggling to come to terms with his sexuality has topped a poll to find viewers favourite gay storyline. However, the controversial romance between EastEnders duo Christian Clarke (John Patridge) and Syed Masood (Marc Elliot) came a close second.

The storyline in Emmerdale involving Aaron Livesy (Danny Miller) struggling to come to terms with his sexuality has topped a poll to find viewers favourite gay storyline. The storyline was nominated for a string of awards at the recent British Soap Awards but sadly for Emmerdale the ceremony was dominated by EastEnders. However, now the soap has managed to beat its BBC counter-part in a poll to find viewers favourite gay storyline. The poll was conducted by gay lobby group Stonewall and found that 44% of viewers preferred the Emmerdale storyline involving Aaron.

EastEnders though was a close second with 43% for their storyline involving Christian Clarke (John Partridge) and Muslin Syed Masood (Marc Elliot). The storyline has not been without its critics from within the Muslim community and the wider general public as well. A vicious homophobic attack on Christian was widely criticised while a homophobic rant by Zeinab Masood (Nina Wadia) was also the cause of complaints and viewers felt her views should have been challenged.

In third position in the poll was the lesbian romance in Coronation Street which had just 13% of the vote. The storyline is between teenagers Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) and Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson) and while it may have, predictably, got tabloids like The Sun in a spin it seemingly hasn’t done the same for viewers. Hollyoaks wasn’t featured at all in the poll because, oddly, it doesn’t have a gay romance storyline at the moment. Although over the years the soap has featured a number of such plots, such as the hugely popular John-Paul (James Sutton) and Craig Dean (Guy Burnet) romance.
