Will Young voted top gay role model in Pop

Singer turned actor Will Young has been voted the top British gay role model in Pop in a poll by Stonewall, the gay rights lobby group.


A poll by gay rights lobby group Stonewall has named Will Young the top gay role-model in British in pop music. The poll was on gay music personalities within the industry which were considered positive role models for young lesbian, gay and bisexual people. With 58% of the vote Will Young came top – he shot to fame in 2001 as the winner of Pop Idol. Shortly after winning the competition he came out as gay and has enjoyed a successful music career since. More recently Young has turned to acting with roles in Skins, Mrs Henderson Presents and as announced today (see here >> ) a role in a new drama for Living.


The other results of the poll by Stonewall were; Alison Goldfrapp with 15%. Kele Okereke with 12%, Joe McElderry with 10% and Lady Sovereign with 5%. Joe McElderry, winner of last years X Factor, came out as gay in July despite previously stating he was gay. The singer decided to come out following an incident on his Twitter account in which he was hacked and pranksters posted Tweets about his sexuality. McElderry described the Twitter incident as the turning point in accepting that he was gay.
