LGBTFrench footballer Florent Malouda, who plays for Chelsea, has spoken out against homophobia in football. Malouda spoke out against homophobia within football in an interview published by Chelsea as part of the new initiative by Kick It Out to tackle homophobia within the sport on the pitch and also by football fans themselves.

“I think it is a problem of knowledge, people are scared of something they do not know. Now you have a lot of information: the internet, satellite television, many sources of information, so there is no excuse to say you do not know. Before people couldn’t even speak out about that [homosexuality] like they were rejecting it. And saying it doesn’t exist. People are wrong to hide behind religion to explain their behaviour against gays, but you have to accept people as they are and once you understand that, you understand our differences are our strengths” – Florent Malouda in a new interview released by Chelsea

Florent’s words have won praise from The Justin Campaign which also works to eradicate homophobia from football. There are currently no openly gay footballers in the English premiership although publicist Max Clifford has stated he has helped gay and bisexual players keep their sexuality a secret from the press.
