BBC backlash after England lose 2018 World Cup bid

PanoramaThe BBC today are facing a backlash from football fans after England lost the bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Yesterday it was revealed that Russia had won the bid to host the 2018 World Cup tournament. England had emerged as favourites and many were confident that it was going to win. Fans are now angry at the BBC who ran a Panorama programme on Monday claiming alleged corruption in FIFA, the governing body of the football and those deciding who would host the 2018 and 2022 world cup games.

Some members of the committee which decides who will host, along with sources close to the panel have said that the negative media of FIFA has been a factor in the reason why England did not win the bid. It seems the BBC Panorama programme was the final straw. In an email obtained by the Media Guardian, it reveals that the BBC had received more than 5,000 emails within the first hour of the news yesterday.

The Have Your Say page on Russia beating England has had over 1,000 comments, with many criticising the BBC. One comment said “Well done BBC, Well done collective British Media (even if some are owned by people from other countries).” Many newspapers have run stories of corruption and negative stories about FIFA over the run up to decision day. The Sunday Times newspaper first revealed allegations of corruption in FIFA earlier this year.
