ThE oNE sHOWChris Evans has given his side of events over The One Show and his joining the BBC magazine programme for the Friday edition which resulted in Adrian Chiles quitting the BBC to join ITV. Evan was added to The One Show for Friday evenings only replacing Chiles for the one edition a week presenting alongside Christine Bleakley.

However, Chiles was unhappy with the move and shortly afterwards left the BBC to join ITV and over the Summer he was joined by Christine Bleakley to launch Daybreak, ITV’s troubled replacement for GMTV. Now in an interview with Heat magazine Evans has given his side of events that lead up to the departure of Chiles. In the interview with Heat magazine the presenter re-calls an evening out with Chiles, after he had been a guest on The One Show.

“Adrian told me he didn’t like doing Fridays. He told me this directly. He didn’t want to give up Match Of The Day 2 on Sundays, but the Friday show was a hassle, Soon after that lovely night out – which went on until 3am, by the way – I got a phone call from the then One Show boss. She said: ‘How do you fancy Fridays on The One Show?’ Which I totally understood, because I’d just had that conversation with Adrian about Fridays being a drag,” – Chris Evans in Heat Magazine

Evans revealed in the interview with Heat that the BBC wanted to boost the ratings for the Friday edition of The One Show because they had always been lower than the rest of the week and they hoped the introduction of Evans would give the Friday show a different feel. Evans went on to add that he got a phone call from then controller of BBC One, Jay Hunt, in December 2009 “tell me Adrian had made a bit of a fuss”. Evans offered to rip up his contract with The One Show to stop the trouble with Chiles but Hunt assured him that the BBC could manage the situation with Adrian.

“She told me they could manage the situation with Adrian. So I didn’t rip it up. Two or three months later, there was the bolt from the blue – Adrian had signed to ITV. And by the way, Adrian hasn’t spoken to me since that night out.”- Chris Evans in Heat Magazine

Following the departures of Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley from The One Show the BBC replaced them with Alex Jones and Jason Manford – though the comedian has since quit the magazine series and is likely to be replaced by Matt Baker. Over at ITV Chiles and Bleakley have had a rough time from the press since the launch of Daybreak which did not rate well with viewers with figures dropping at one point to just half a million viewers. While ratings have since improved its audience appreciation index remains low and rumours of revamps and axings still fill the tabloids.
