The Tudors – What Should Come Next?

With The Tudors coming to an end, its fourth and final season is currently airing on BBC Two, we’re asking you which other period from history you’d like to see the focus of a historical drama next. Showtime has lined up The Borgias as a successor to The Tudors but is the tale of the notorious Italian renaissance family of interest to you?

 

With The Tudors coming to an end, its fourth and final season is currently airing on BBC Two, we’re asking you which other period from history you’d like to see the focus of a historical drama next. HBO’s ‘Dallas in Togas’ saga Rome told the story of the Roman Empire from the rise and fall of Caesar to the death of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra. Showtime has lined up The Borgias as a successor to The Tudors but is the tale of the notorious Italian renaissance family of interest to you?

 

The Tudors of course only told the story of Henry VIII (played by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) but there were other Tudor monarchs apart from the notorious King with Six Wives. His father Henry VII won the War of the Roses, a bitter Civil War, and defeated Richard III at the battle of Bosworth. Then there is Mary Tudor (played by Sarah Bolger in The Tudors) whose reign following that of her brother Edward VI earned her the title ‘Bloody Mary’. We have long since argued that Showtime should have followed up The Tudors which a series on the reign of ‘Bloody Mary’ and struggle to claim the throne following the death of her brother. Also of interest would be the Lady Jane Grey who has proclaimed Queen when Edward VI died as the English court desperately tried to prevent the Catholic Mary from taking the Throne. Mary succeeded though and Lady Jane Grey was later executed.

 

The Tudor dynasty certainly offers plenty of scope for drama besides that of the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I which are so often the subject of dramas and films. But beyond the Tudor dynasty lies a wealth healthy waiting to be tapped from the Anglo Saxon Kings to the Norman Conquest, the Crusades through to the War of the Roses and later the Jacobite uprisings in Scotland. They are just some of the more notable points in British history – European and World history offer many more interesting points besides.
