Neighbours casts new gay character

NeighboursAustralian soap Neighbours has cast a new gay character which could lead to the soaps first same-sex couple.

According to reports former Home and Away actor Bob Morley is set to join the cast as nurse Aidan Foster – a new love interest for Chris Pappas (James Mason). The character of Chris was introduced to Neighbours last year and was revealed to be gay – it was the first time the Aussie soap had featured a regular gay character. Now Ramsay Street looks set to get its first ever same-sex couple.

“I don’t see it as a big deal that the character is gay. It certainly doesn’t define him and what the writers have planned is really interesting and authentic.” – Morley speaking to the Herald Sun.

James Mason as Chris PappasMorley has signed a six month contract with Neighbours but sources indicitate his run could be extended if he proves popular. Neighbours producer Susan Bower has previously stated it was only a matter of time before a love interest was introduced for Chris. However, when it was first revealed that the character of Chris was to be gay there were some doubts over how committed Neighbours would be to having a full-time gay character.

The doubts were over the restrictions placed on Neighbours in Australia because of its time-slot. Neighbours and Home & Away have both featured lesbian kisses in recent years which were the subject of some complaints from viewers – the back lash against those kisses also added to doubts about whether or not Neighbours would go introduce a gay relationship.

Earlier this year the soap moved from its long-term home of Channel Ten to digital station Eleven because of low ratings which have plagued the serial for some years now.
