Coronation Street Switches Back To Mid-Week Slot

Stella's iffy accent will be heard on Wednesdays from 2012Coronation Street is returning to its traditional Wednesday night slot after it was switched to Thursday evenings in 2009.

Corrie aired on Wednesday evenings for nearly 50 years, with an episode screened practically every mid-week, along with Monday nights since the show launched in 1960. Launching at 7pm in December 1960 the show was soon moved 30 minutes later and became the nations most popular programme.

In 1989 a Friday edition was added to the schedules and in recent years two episodes have aired on Monday and Friday, with a single episode on Wednesdays. In 2009 however ITV re-structured its schedules.

An ITV spokesperson told The Guardian newspaper in 2009: “Coronation Street will make a move from Wednesday to Thursday nights on ITV1 from 23 July as part of a change to the schedule to reflect ITV’s contracts for the Champions League, FA Cup and England internationals, which will see ITV1’s live football broadcast on Wednesday evenings.

“In addition, two separate episodes of Emmerdale will be broadcast on Thursdays from the same date. We’re delighted that Thursday evenings on ITV1 will be a great showcase for soap from Weatherfield and the Woolpack.”

The move back to Wednesday nights coincides with ITV’s new contract with UEFA which will see the Champions League football coverage move to Tuesday nights. The sport switch sees the mid-week schedules free again from interuption by football matches meaning Corrie can return to its traditional 7.30pm slot.

Broadcast reports: “Reflecting the move of ITV1’s live football matches from Wednesday to Tuesday nights next year, Coronation Street will move from Thursday at 8.30pm to Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm from autumn 2012.”

Peter Fincham, ITV’s much mocked and derided director of television, confirmed that Emmerdale will stay in its Thursday 8pm slot,  having proved much more successful on the night than its Weatherfield counterpart.

The half-hour between the two editions of the Leeds produced soap will see new comedy and sitcoms filling the slot as Fincham believes ITV had lost its never in trying out new pre-watershed comedy. Coronation Street will return to Wednesdays from 2012, the broadcaster has no plans to impliment the soap switch sooner.
