Advertisers drop campaigns from Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little LairsTwo advertisers have dropped their campaigns from American teen-drama Pretty Little Liars reportedly because of a lesbian character within the series.

Pretty Little Liars airs on ABC Family in America and MTV in the UK. It became the target of the conservative group Florida Family Association after the character of Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell) was revealed to be a lesbian. The conservative group has taken issue to the lesbian character bizarrely claiming the lesbian character is unsuitable for the shows target audience of teen girls because it sends a message “that reinforces and legitimises this homosexual lifestyle in a manner that could affect these young girls’ sexual identity for a lifetime.” Which clearly flies in the face of endless evidence which states quite the contrary.

However, Pretty Little Liars is not the first ABC Family drama to feature a gay character. In Greek the character of Calvin (Paul James) was openly gay having a number of boyfriends across the shows run and was praised by critics for being a non-stereotypical gay character. A spokesperson for one of the companies which pulled their campaign has stated it was not down to the content of the show but the audiences’ relevance to their brand.
