GLAAD praises new Dancing with the Stars line up

ABCGLAAD, The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, has praised the new line-up of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars line-up as it includes Chaz Bono and Carson Kressley.

The duo were revealed to be part of the line-up for the 13th season of the ABC series. GLAAD has praised the highly popular series for its inclusion of an openly gay man and a transgender person.

“With both gay and transgender contestants represented on this upcoming season, ABC will send viewers a strong message about the diversity within the LGBT community. At a time when transgender representation in the media is sorely lacking, Chaz Bono joining the cast is a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are another wonderful part of the fabric of American culture. Appearing on such a high-profile show will allow millions of Americans to get to know him in a whole new light.” – Herndon Graddick, senior of director of programs for GLAAD, in a statement.

Chaz Bono is the child of Cher and Sonny and has been very open about his gender transition from male to female – it was the subject of a recent documentary. Meanwhile Carson Kressley is known for his part in Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and How To Look Good Naked. He was also an judge on True Beauty and has his own chat-show on OWN (Oprah Winfrey’s Network). He isn’t, of course, the first gay man to take part in Dancing with the Stars – that honour went to Lance Bass.

So who else is taking part in this year’s Dancing with the Stars? Well actress and daytime chat-show host Ricki Lake, Scream actor David Arquette, Nancy Grace, Rob Kardashian, sportsman Ron Artest, Kristin Cavallari, actor J.R. Martinez, Hope Solo, actress Elisabetta Canalis and Chynna Phillips.
