EastEnders bosses thrilled with spin-off series E20’s audience increase

The third series of E20 has proved to be a ratings success for the BBC.

EastEnders: E20 is halfway through its third series and the episodes aired have already exceeded over 1.2 million views across BBC Online and BBC Three. The online episodes have seen a 50% growth in the BBC iplayer audience of the teen-aimed spin off from the main soap.

Deborah Sathe, producer of E20, says: “I am thrilled to see E20 has sustained its position as a front runner in online drama. Coming off the back of the Webby Award win earlier in the year, and with more people watching programmes online via their computer and tablet, it seems like it is an exciting time for multiplatform drama.”

The first series began in January 2010 and was described as an ‘internet soap opera’ which would see characters from E20 also introduced to the long running main BBC One series, notably Fatboy played by Ricky Norwood – who went on to become a soap award winner thanks to his role in both shows.

Launched as part of EastEnders’ 25th anniversary celebrations it became an instant hit with the youth audience and proved so successful an omnibus version of the episodes ultimately aired on BBC Three.
