Pope: gay marriage threatens future of humanity

gay marriagePope Benedict XVI has outlandishly claimed that the legalisation of gay marriage would threaten the future of humanity.
The Pope has been outspoken on homosexuality, gay rights and marriage equality before claiming, before, that homosexuality is a threat to the survival of the human race – however, the Pope has seemingly claimed that secularism and atheism were equally a threat to humanity.
Reuters reports that the Pope made comments regarding marriage equality to 180 diplomats gathered at the Vatican. The head of the Catholic Church reportedly said that ‘pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman’ and ‘This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society.  Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself’
The Pope made other various statements regarding the ‘traditional’ family unit such as ‘The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue’
Benedict XVI has been widely criticised for his stance on homosexuality which is seen as out of touch with the modern world. The Pope’s failure to modernise the Catholic Church has been blamed for its decline in some countries and perception amongst the public that not only is it out of date but also a “nasty” form of Christianity.
State visits by the Pope to various countries, such as Spain and the UK, have been met with protests by the LGBT communities with them who object to his presence.{jcomments off}
