Oxford City dismiss player over Gareth Thomas tweet

Gareth ThomasOxford City football club have dismissed a player over a tweet made about the openly gay Rugby player Gareth Thomas (pictured right).

Oxford City FC have announced that has released player Lee Steele from his contract with the club following his comments on Twitter about Gareth Thomas. The openly gay sportsman entered the Celebrity Big Brother house last week alongside the likes of Natalie Cassidy and Denise Welch as the new series started on Channel Five.

Steele posted a tweet on Twitter regarding Thomas’ participation in CBB writing ‘I wouldn’t fancy the bed next to Gareth Thomas #padlockeda**ehole’. The comment was subsequently removed and the account has not been updated since. However, the comment was enough for Oxford City to decide to release Steele from his obligations to the club.

In a statement released to the Football Association the club said ‘The Oxford City board have decided to release Lee Steele in view of his recent comment via social media which is considered seriously contrary to the ethos of the club.’

Gareth Thomas is one of the few openly gay sportsmen in the public spot-light with others including Nigel Owens, Jed Hooper, Steven Davies and Anton Hysen. There are currently no openly gay premiership players mostly because of the fear of backlash from fans and the media say some commentators. {jcomments off}
