Rick Santorum upsets gay rights campaigners

Rick SantorumRick Santorum has once again upset gay rights campaigners this time over jibes about a pink bowling ball.

Santorum is one of the hopefuls in the Republican race to be nominated their presidential candidate to take on Barack Obama in the elections later this year. Santorum has already upset gay right campaigners on several occasions and now he has upset them once more and probably will do so again before the Republican presidential candidacy race is over.

The latest upset caused by Santorum regards a pink bowling ball. According to Reuters journalist Sam Youngman, the politician, told a Wisconsin boy not to use a pink bowling boy during a photo opportunity set up for Santorum. When challenged over why he would not allow the boy to use a pink boy Santorum reportedly said ‘friends don’t let friends use pink balls’

The incident has sparked something of a backlash with Fred Sainz of the Human Rights Campaign stating ‘“This is another example of Rick Santorum intentionally making ignorant statements that have a real impact on LGBT people,…Whether he’s comparing our marriages to inanimate objects, saying our children would be better off with a parent in prison as opposed to two loving same-sex parents, or calling open military service a ‘tragic social experiment;’ he’s proven that he thinks LGBT people are second-class citizens not worthy of dignity or respect. In this case, he’s advancing tired gender norms by implying a boy should be ashamed or embarrassed to use a certain colour bowling ball.”

In January of this year Santorum suggested that children of lesbian parents were “worse off than children with a father in prison”. Santorum’s opposition to gay marriage has also drawn much criticism with he describing marriage as a “privilege” and not a “right”. The politician also claimed that legalising gay marriage would lead to group marriages and even incestuous marriages becoming legal as well. Santorum also does not believe that gay and lesbians should be allowed to serve in the American military.

Santorum is an ultra-conservative Republican opposing abortion and any form of birth control but is a supporter of the death penalty. {jcomments off}
