EastEnders actor Nitin Ganatra to leave show

Radio Times reports that Nitin Ganatra is leaving his role as Masood Ahmed in EastEnders.

The actor will leave the BBC soap ‘later this year’ after a nine year stint as postie Masood for whom, it is expected, the door will be left open.

“We can confirm that Nitin will be leaving EastEnders. Nitin has been a wonderful addition to the cast for the past nine years and we wish him all the best for the future.” – EastEnders Spokesperson

Since his arrival in Walford in October 2007, the character’s storylines have included his marriage to Zainab falling apart; a feud with Zainab’s first husband, Yusef (Ace Bhatti); a recurring gambling problem; and short-lived relationships with Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) and Jane Beale (Laurie Brett). Masood was also strongly opposed to his eldest son Syed (Marc Elliott) coming out as gay.

“When I trained as an actor, I set out to play many different characters and never did I know that I would be so fortunate to have found a character that I have loved playing for nine years. However, after thinking long and hard, I have decided that it is time to get back out there and take on some other roles. I will of course miss everyone at EastEnders – I have had a brilliant time there, and who knows, one day Masood may be back.” – Nitin Ganatra speaking to Radio Times

Last month it was reported that Danny-Boy Hatchard is leaving his role as Lee Carter and that Samantha Womack and Rita Simons are both bowing out of the saga as Mitchell sisters Ronnie and Roxy.
