ATV Choice: Greggs – More than Meats the Pie

Sky 1 go beyond the counter of Britain’s beloved bakery, Greggs. From a North East institution to an ever expanding ‘pastie’ retailer.

From humble beginnings – founder John Gregg delivering eggs and yeast to families in Newcastle upon Tyne via his trusty pushbike back in the 1930s – Greggs has risen very nicely indeed, now boasting almost 1,700 shops.

This eight-part series, initially entitled Baking for Britain when announced last year, is a taste of life at the high street favourite, crusts and all, following the company for almost a year and getting to know the key members of its 20,000 staff, taking viewers from the store front to the boardroom and top-secret tasting labs.

Big changes are on the horizon and this opening episode throws us straight into the mix as Greggs’ grand plans to go upmarket get under way. And we’re talking more than a fresh lick of paint, with designer Phil introducing classy new interiors and
the master bakers whipping up patisserie-style delicacies to sit alongside the old favourites.

Someone feeling the pressure is retail development manager Alison, who has just two months to give ten bakeries a makeover. From the point of view of the loyal Greggs customer, will it all be worth it?

Executive Producer for Mentorn Media, Neil Grant said: “What a fantastic opportunity and privilege to make a fun access series behind the scenes with the nation’s high street icon – this will be popular television at its very best!”

Greggs – More than Meats the Pie, tonight (Monday 29th April) at 9pm on Sky 1 and Sky 1 HD
