Teen soap bags awards
The British Soap Awards have, in the past, been blasted for being predictable and boring but this years proves quite the opposite. The usually criminally neglected soap, Hollyoaks, managed to bag an impressive six awards. The Channel 4 soap, which is labeled a ‘teen’ soap by its critics, has shown it’s got the pedigree to take on the big three soaps after a string of high-profile and well received storylines – which has seen the soap ‘mature’ and shake off its ‘dollyoaks’ image. Gemma Bissix won two awards for her role of Clare Cunningham in Hollyoaks winning Best Exit and Spectacular Scene Of The Year, Bissix has since rejoined EastEnders.
The biggest shocks, for some within the industry, will be Emmerdale only managing to get two awards and daytime soap, Doctors, not managing one. The BBC medical drama, while also criminally neglected by wider audiences, usually manages to get at least one award. Meanwhile Emmerdale’s lacklustre showing comes on the back of its move to hour-long episodes on Tuesdays which compete with EastEnders and declining ratings. It also comes as a new producer takes the helm and stories of low morale on set hit the headlines.
