Editor Reports: Going Down on the Dales

Forget ‘Inside Soap’, forget ‘Bizzare’ – This edition of Editor Reports is the only place where you’ll see in article what people are really thinking.

Yes it might not go down well with producers and TV companies – but Ian Westhead, standing in for a holidaying Doug Lambert, doesn’t care about what the BBC or NBC think. He says “let those other publications lick the behinds of the telly execs for some pointless exclusives, and we’ll say it like it really is.” Which is to the point, and possibly true enough.

Well here I am ready to rip the raw hide out of the utter rubbish some publications think is newsworthy, as well as looking at those stories ATV News decided to leave up to me to cover in my own joyous style. Today I’m pondering the closure of a fan forum in protest at Yorkshire Television.

It seems Emmerdale fans are a tad slow when it comes to realising the Yorkshire-based soap is on the skids, it’s had glory years – and we’re sure they will return. But it doesn’t seem like it will happen any time soon.

ATV Today feature writers have been warning of a quality deficit for the past year-or-so. Well anyway, fans of the soap have finally caught up and seem quite unhappy with the dales’ new producer. And some, in protest, have closed an Emmerdale message board.

Let’s be brutally honest, Emmerdale will continue to be crap until ITV stop milking it for all its worth and stick it back on four episodes – half hour long – a week. There is more chance of Roxanne Pallett not trying to get some press coverage than that happening however.

ITV Yorkshire, who produce the saga at their Leeds studios, say Emmerdale fans tell them that they love the show. However, we’re not sure if only fans in certain areas were selected for their views, based on good-looks, personality and positive opinions of the soap. Oh, the research wasn’t carried out by Ant and Dec’s production team, sorry. Mind we can all put the good comments out of a hat and chuck away the negative ones…

Emmerdale will get better one day. But to mis-quote Vera Lynn, who knows where, and who knows when. Editor Doug Lambert will be back shortly with his usual Editor Reports with views on the news.

Remember when YTV’s Emmerdale was worth watching, twice a week.
