Who’s Off? The Doctor has spoken…
The BBC confirm it is all change for their big science fiction series.
David Tennant has tonight made public his decision to leave the BBC’s sci-fi drama Doctor Who at the end of 2009.
Tennant, who has played the Time lord since series two of the revived ‘Who’, confirmed live on ITV that he was quitting the role that has made him popular with family audiences across the UK and beyond.
Such is the affection for Tennant’s Doctor Who era – he tonight won the gong for ‘Outstanding Drama Performance’ at the National Television Awards -where he made his leaving announcement upon collecting the trophy.
“In January I go back to make four new specials which take Doctor Who through to the end of 2009… …But when Doctor Who returns in 2010, it won’t be with me. The 2009 shows will be my last playing the Doctor.”
Further information from the BBC Press Office is still yet to be released with only the confirmation that the search for a new who is now on.
Doctor Who originally launched in 1963, running until 1989. The series was revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role for the first series.
