New Camelot for the BBC

The BBC and Showtime are developing a new series which would be a modern-day based series retelling the story of Camelot.

Showtime and the BBC are developing a new series based on legends of Camelot with Michael Hirst and Morgan O’Sullivan, producers of Showtime’s The Tudors, serving as creative executives on the proposed series. The proposed project would be a contemporary based series which would retell the stories of Camelot, the mythical city in the legends of King Arthur.

If Camelot makes it past the commissioning stage it would be the second Arthurian based drama on the BBC. Saturday night drama Merlin is also a retelling of the Arthurian legend but is set in a time peroid closer to the original stories than the proposed Camelot would be. Merlin is currently airing on BBC One and is enjoying good ratings and reviews.

Michael Hurst will write the script for the proposed project alongside Morgan O’Sullivan and Douglas Rae. Showtime and the BBC have previously worked together on Hurst’s historical drama, The Tudors. Although not strictly historically accurate the dramisation of Henry VIII’s reign has proved a hit for Showtime and a third series has just completed filming.

The second season of The Tudors recently finished its run in the UK on BBC Two. It’s expected the BBC will show the third season after it airs on Showtime next year.
