Word on the Web: A Return for Brookside?

Your Views on a possible return for Brookside on Channel 4.

Rumour has it that Liverpool soap Brookside, created by former ATV drama writer Phil Redmond, could be revived despite being axed by Channel 4 several years ago after years of declining ratings and sensationalist storylines.

The big question is though; do you want to see the return of Brookside? Are you a fan of of the Merseyside serial? Did you stick with the soap right up until the bitter end or did you jump ship once the storylines became too OTT? Or were you never a fan of Brookside?

Brookside began on November 2nd 1982 on the launch night of Channel 4 and soon became one of the network’s most popular programmes pulling in on average 8 million viewers. The series began with residents arriving on the new housing estate, in middle class Liverpool, with the stories early on concentrating on the lives of the residents and their cultural differences – the upper class snobs having to downsize due to money problems, while the working class family moving up in the world. However as the years went on Brookside decided to become a taboo breaker bringing storylines such as murder, rape, incest, domestic violence and cults all to screens.

The show won a number of awards, as well as much praise for its socially aware storylines however fell out of flavour with network bosses in the early 2000s when they deemed the show too sensational and not everyday life anymore. They pulled the plug on the show after a recent revamp had taken place to bring Brookside back to its roots.
