Tabloid votes Steve McDonald Favourite Soap Character
The People, have named Coronation Street’s Steve McDonald as the nation’s favourite soap character.
Sunday tabloid, The People, have revealed their readers have voted Steve McDonald, from Coronation Street, as the nation’s favourite soap character, well there’s no accounting for taste. McDonald took first place above soap legends such as Dot Cotton and Blanche Hunt.
Steve is played by Simon Gregson in the ITV1 soap and has been a fixture of Corrie for twenty years having made his debut in the Granada Television production in 1989. During the last two decades Steve has been involved in many storylines from dodgy and criminal dealings, his marriage to Karen (Suranne Jones) and one-night stand with toxic Tracey Barlow (Kate Ford).
EastEnders’ Dot Cotton came in second in the poll, the character first seen in 1985 is played by former ATV actress June Brown. The readers of the trashy paper also voted Coronation Street as their top soap with EastEnders coming second followed by Emmedale and Hollyoaks respectively.
Unsurprisingly the paper reports that Coronation Street is favoured by viewers in the North, and the Midlands, while southern viewers, and London ones, much prefer EastEnders.
