Teen Pregnancy plot in Neighbours Criticised

FrantlemediaJust days after Aussie soap Home and Away come under attack for a lesbian storyline rival soap Neighbours has come under fire for a teenage pregnancy plot.

FrantlemediaConservative Christians in Australia are once again up in arms just days after attacking Home and Away for a forthcoming lesbian romance plot. Now the target of the Christians venom is rival soap Neighbours which is currently running a teenage pregnancy plot involving Bridget [Eloise Mignon] and Declan [James Sorensen]. The Christians feel that as with the lesbian romance in Home and Away the plot is unsuitable for family viewing.

“Teenage pregnancy is not something that should be considered the norm. Programmes like Neighbours can make the behaviours that lead to teenage pregnancy seem normal and acceptable. A lot of kids just aren’t ready to get their head around details of explicit sexuality” – Pro-Family Perspectives director Angela Conway

Home and AwayHowever, Neighbours executive producer Susan Bower and actress Eloise Mingnon both defended the plot in the soap. Teenage pregnancies are almost a stable of British soaps with all of the main soaps having featured such a plotline within the past few years. Because of this they are rarely criticised in the UK but in Australia things are very different which is why this plot, and the lesbian romance in Home and Away, have drawn such attention.

Earlier in the month it was announced that Eloise Morgnon was quitting her role of Bridget in Neighbours to concentrate on her studies as a consequence her entire on-screen family have also been dropped from the soap.

In the UK Home and Away and Neighbours both air weekdays on Five. For the latest spoilers for both soaps click Here >>
