Emmerdale is set to keep viewers glued to their seats in 2009 with a stunning line-up of new signings that will see the nation’s favourite village re-vamped, re-ignited and raring to go. Leading the way is the explosive return of Charity Tate, as Emma Atkins reprises her role as one of the most memorable characters in the show’s history.

Charity will return in a blaze of controversy later this year to the shock of her daughter Debbie (Charley Webb) and ex-lover Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley). Charity was last seen in March 2005 fleeing the village with her son Noah after getting revenge on Sadie King (Patsy Kensit) by having an affair with her husband Jimmy (Nick Miles). Debbie was left heartbroken after begging her mum to stay and has been estranged from Charity ever since. Charity’s return will follow the hotly anticipated return of Dales bad boy Cain Dingle next month and will throw the village into turmoil.

Emma Atkins says “Charity is a wonderfully complex character and an absolute joy to play. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to explore a new era of Charity, Cain and Debbie and will relish seeing what she’s been up to since we saw her last.”

Charity was famed for having the survival instincts of an alley cat and originally arrived in the village in March 2000 as a prostitute on the run. She became a key player in the Tate empire after marrying mogul Chris Tate. Her five year reign also included an affair with Zoe Tate and being framed for Chris’ murder. Charity then set her sights on millionaire Tom King, who she was due to marry until her arch rival Sadie tricked him into believing Charity was having an affair with Cain.

Gavin Blyth, Series Producer says “It’s going to be an incredibly exciting year for Emmerdale with Charity and Cain back at the heart of the action. This is the first in a series of new signings and intriguing characters on the horizon and we’re going to delight in reminding viewers that when it comes to compelling drama and commanding characters, Emmerdale is a force to be reckoned with.”
