The wedding of Peggy and Archie Mitchell which also saw the exciting climax to the Ronnie and Danielle storyline averaged 10.58m and had a 48% share of the audience at that time. The episode peaked at over 11 million viewers with a 50% share and trounced ITV1’s cop drama The Bill which was left with a measly 3 million viewers and a paltry share of just 14%.
Several internet forums went into meltdown following the episode with James Welsh a member of staff from Digital Spy commenting that there was an unprecedented spike in traffic to their website after the episode aired. Another site Walford Web Forums crashed completely.
Additionally an higher than usual power surge was recorded following the episode by the national grid. A surge of 500MW is standard practice at the end of most episodes of the Walford drama but at 8.30pm last night the grid saw a surge of 1270MW more than double the usual number.
