ShowtimeShowtime’s historical romp The Tudors will end after four seasons, it’s been announced. A fourth season of the drama has been commissioned to conclude the story of Henry VIII and his six wives. The third series, due to air soon, tells the story of Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleves while the fourth will focus on Catherine Howard, who was beheaded for adultery, and Henry’s final wife Catherine Parr – who out lived him.

In the series Henry VIII is played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers with Henry Cavil playing the King’s old friend, Charles Brandon. The first two seasons of the show have aired in the UK on BBC Two and it’s likely the third season will also air on the channel. The fourth season will begin production in Ireland later this year for broadcast in 2010. It’s possible a spin-off series, focusing on the reigns of Henry’s three children, may follow.
