It’s been announced that actor Terence Alexander has passed away at the age of 86. The actor is probably best known for his role of Charlie Hungerford in Bergerac, the Jersey based cop series which BBCstarred John Nettles as Jim Bergerac. Bergerac ran for ten years on BBC One between 1981 and 1991 and was sold to over 35 countries. The police series was hugely popular with audiences and the character of Charlie Hungerford was one of the show’s most popular characters, alongside Jim Bergerac of course. Charlie was the former father-in-law to Jim Bergerac who remained friendly with his former son-in-law despite the marriage of his daughter, Deborah [Deborah Grant] collapsing due to Jim’s alcoholism. The character of Charlie would often become entangled with Jim Bergerac’s investigations into various dodgy characters.

While Bergerac is probably the actors most famous role it was by no means his only television role and over his long and varied career he appeared in a wide range of programming. While appearing on Bergerac Alexander also guest-starred in a memorable Doctor Who story, The Mark of the Rani, which also guest-starred Kate O’Mara. Other roles include appearances in Crown Court, Dempsey and Makepeace, The New Avengers, The Pallisers, Bless This House, Please Sir, Casualty and a recurring role in sitcom Terry and June.
