Soap News Update: Emmerdale Needs Charity

Charity Tate’s return to Emmerdale has been announced by ITV. The wanna-be bitch (she’s no Kim Tate) is to literally run back into the series on Thursday October 1.

Actress Emma Atkins has filmed her first scenes for an episode which ITV describe as “explosive.” In the edition Charity is seen wearing a wedding dress – in a repeat of a previous Emmerdale sequence from 2005 when Delilah “Del” Dingle turned up in the village wearing a bridal gown also.

The groom’s identity is being kept under wraps, along with details of whether the surprise wedding goes ahead.

Emma Atkins, 34, says “I am incredibly excited to be continuing Charity’s journey and feel privileged to have been asked back. It is a new chapter in both my life and Charity’s and I couldn’t wait to start work.”

ITV suggest that Charity’s return in a blaze of controversy – whether viewers will care remains to be seen – will shock her daughter Debbie played by Charley Webb and ex-lover the recently returned Cain Dingle portrayed by Jeff Hordley.

Charity was last seen in March 2005 fleeing the village with her son Noah after getting revenge on the long departed Sadie, played by Patsy Kensit, by having an affair with her husband Jimmy “Punch and Judy” King.

Debbie was left heartbroken after begging her mum to stay and has been estranged from Charity ever since.

Gavin Blyth, Series Producer says “Charity’s dramatic return will have repercussions throughout the village. Viewers are in for a real treat.”

I’m not entirely sure treat is the word, and readers of The Sun newspaper are seemingly unimpressed:

“Yawn! Because Emmerdale needs another Dingle. I might switch off.” One poster stated, while others have good memories too: “Didn’t we have another Dingle turn up in a wedding dress a few years ago? I think that a new story is in order – too many run away brides!”

The sitcom, farce, pantomime and occasional soap opera known as Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm and also at 8.00pm on Thursdays.
