ABC has axed its new supernatural series Eastwick, based on the popular film The Witches of Eastwick, after ratings sank below four million. The series is the first major genre casualty of the new season in America.
The Witches of Eastwick inspired series, simply titled Eastwick, has become the first major genre casualty of the new American season after ABC pulled the plug on the series due to low ratings. The broadcaster had previously described the programme as a “quiet success” but more recently described it as “doomed”.
Critics quickly dubbed the series ‘Desperate Housewitches’ and also compared it to Charmed which shared a similar premise. However, while Charmed was often in danger of cancellation it managed to last eight seasons whereas Eastwick hasn’t even managed to make it to the half way point of its first series.
