ITV could charge for Digital Channels
ITV could move its digital channels ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 from freeview to subscription only platforms as part of new chairman Archie Norman overhaul of the broadcaster.
The Sunday Times and The Mail On Sunday both report that Archie Norman, the new chairman of ITV, is considering charging viewers for its digital channels as part of a complete overhaul of the struggling broadcaster. Norman is considering moving digital channels ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 away from freeview and onto subscription only platforms to stem the losses at the broadcaster. Norman could place the channels on the subscription platforms as early as next year.
If the move does happen it will be Norman’s first big decision as the new chairman of ITV. Norman previously turned around the fortunes of supermarket chain Asda and now the television industry waits to see if he can work his magic on ITV. The commercial broadcaster has been hit badly from the down turn in advertising revenue and the economic recession.
