Coronation Street producer Kim Crowther is stepping down after overseeing the Granada soap since May 2008. Her decision to step down from the role of Producer on the Manchester based soap comes as it prepared to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. Crowther will be replaced by Phil Collinson, former series producer on Doctor Who. Collinson’s other credits, aside from Doctor Who, include Linda Green, Born and Bred and Sea of Souls. He was also a script writer on Emmerdale in the late 1990’s.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be joining Corrie, the nation’s favourite street and a show I’ve been a huge fan of all my life . It goes without saying that it’s a tremendous honour to be entrusted with building on Coronation Street’s success and creating the must-see storylines for 2010 and beyond. Kim will be a tough act to follow but I will be working with one of the best teams in the business and I can’t wait to get stuck in.” – Phil Collinson
In recent months Crowther has come under fire from some Coronation Street fans who were unhappy about the Kevin Webster/Molly Dobbs affair storyline. The fans claim that the affair is out of character for Molly and reportedly actor Michael Le Vell is unhappy with the storyline as well. The producer has defended the storyline claiming that Molly is not acting out of character and is representative of wives having affairs up and down the country.
