Coronation Street producer Kim Crowther has revealed that the character of Blanche Hunt will get an on-screen funeral later this year which will see the return of Tracy Barlow to the cobbles of Weatherfield. Late last year actress Maggie Jones passed away following a battle with illness and her co-stars paid tribute to the actress. Maggie Jones had played the character of Blanche on and off since 1974 and was hugely popular with audiences for her witty one-liners and put downs. Following Jones’ death the character’s absence was explained away as being on holiday with a friend.
Yesterday producer Kim Crowther appeared on This Morning where she revealed details of several upcoming storylines which included the funeral for Blanche. The funeral will see the brief return of Tracy Barlow but the character will be back for a longer stint towards the end of the year.
“Blanche’s death seemed the perfect opportunity to introduce [Tracy] back to the show, as she is released from prison especially to attend the funeral and allowed say goodbye to her grandmother. This won’t be the last we see of Tracy though – she is set to share a cell with a well-known character – who could it be?” – Kim Crowther speaking on This Morning
The producer also teased on other stories that would lead the countdown to the soaps 50th anniversary in December. Crowther revealed that another resident of the street would end up sharing a cell with Tracy! Later this year Crowther will step down and hand over to new producer Phil Collinson who previously produced Doctor Who and Born & Bred.
