All My Children actor James Mitchell dies

American actor James Mitchell has died aged 89. He was also a celebrated broadway performer and dancer. In recent years he had renewed fame in ABC Television’s soap opera All My Children.

The broadcaster behind All My Children released a statement saying that James had died after suffering from pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

His final appearance as wealthy Palmer Cortlandt, in the ABC soap, was on January 5th 2010 as the saga celebrated its 40th anniversary. He had retired as a regular in the series a year earlier. Mitchell earned seven daytime Emmy nominations for the part of Palmer since his debut in All My Children back in 1979.

His long career started in the 1950s landing numerous roles in broadway productions including Brigadoon, Bloomer Girl and Carousel.

Numerous film roles followed including 1955’s hit Oklahoma. Mitchell died on Friday in Los Angeles.
