ITVActor Alex Carter has decided to quit the Yorkshire soap Emmerdale. The ITV star confirmed his departure in a BBC radio broadcast. The actor currently plays Jamie Hope on the ITV soap and has been with the series for the past four years – but has reportedly decided to move onto new projects. Carter revealed his decision to leave the soap during an interview with Shaun Keaveny on BBC 6 Music.

The actor joined the soap in 2006 as the village’s postman and son of Bob Hope, Woolpack barman and wife of postmistress Viv. Previous to joining Emmerdale he been a regular in the Channel Four soap Hollyoaks as Lee Hunter for several years.

An ITV spokesperson added: “We can confirm that after four years on the show Alex Cater has decided to leave Emmerdale. He’s been a great asset to the show and we wish him all the very best for the future.”

The character of Jamie Hope has been involved in a few memorable storylines over his four years in the village; he was one of the many suspects in the murder of Tom King. Jamie and father Bob were both placed in the police investigation into businessman King’s death  as they had run a vendetta against him after the death of Jamie’s sister Dawn when in true Emmerdale disaster style a house Tom’s company built collapsed on her. A modern Towering Inferno plot of dodgy building, fire and explosions. Jamie also had an affair with barmaid Louise Appleton, which wasn’t pretty to watch.
