Jessie Wallace to return to EastEnders

Following the news that Shane Richie is to reprise his role of Alfie Moon in EastEnders, it has been confirmed that Jessie Wallace will also be returning to the BBC One soap.

Richie’s comeback was reported over the weekend, sparking speculation on whether Wallace was too in the soap’s plans. The pairing of their characters, Alfie and Kat, garnered a strong fanbase.

However the course of true love didn’t run smoothly as ever in soapland; fans rooted first for the dithering pair to couple up and later to overcome difficulties that arose in their ensuing marriage. Their loyal support paid off when the Moons left Albert Square together in 2005 to start a new life away from Walford.

“I’ve really enjoyed playing different roles over the last few years, but am excited to slip back into Kat Slater’s stilettos. I’ve missed her.” – BBC Online notes Jessie Wallace as saying

The actress made her debut in the East London based saga in 2000, and the ensuing five years saw her character central to several high-profile storylines. The dramatic episodes in which Kat dropped the bombshell on her younger sister Zoe that they are in fact mother and daughter after she was abused by their paternal uncle are what she is most remembered for. Richie made his first appearance as charismatic Queen Vic landlord Alfie in 2002.

Since leaving EastEnders in 2005, Wallace has appeared in several episodes of Wild at Heart as well as a number of one off dramas and theatre productions. She will return to filming with EastEnders later this year for scenes to be aired in the autumn.

The Slater sisters slowly won fans over following their brash introduction to Walford in 2000
