Showtime has set the return date for the fourth and final season of historical drama The Tudors which stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry VIII. The series will return to the broadcaster on April 11th for the opening episode of the final season which will charter Henry’s marriages to Katherine Howard [Tamzin Merchant] and Catherine Parr [Joely Richardson]. The popular drama has so far chartered his marriages to Catherine of Aragon [Maria Doyle Kennedy], the rise and fall of Anne Boleyn [Natalie Dormer], the rise and death of Jane Seymour [Anita Briem/Annabelle Wallis] and the short-lived marriage to Anne of Cleves [Joss Stone].
Showtime decided to end the series after four seasons with the conclusion of Henry’s reign rather than continue the drama to tell the story of the reigns of his children; Edward, Elizabeth and Mary [Sarah Bolger]. The broadcaster has lined up a new historical drama, The Borgias, as a successor to The Tudors which will star Jeremy Irons as the patriarch of the notorious renaissance family.
The fourth and final season of The Tudors is expected to air on BBC Two in the UK later in the year.
