Actor Bill Tarmey, who plays Jack Duckworth on
Coronation Street, is to leave the Granada series after 31 years. The actor has decided to retire from the soap to spend more time with his family. The actor originally wanted to bow out of the soap last year but was convinced to remain with Corrie until it celebrates its 50th anniversary in December.
Executive producer Kieran Roberts, new producer Phil Collinson and storyliners on the soap are working out a fitting exit for the character of Jack Duckworth. Last year the character moved out of the street to move in with his new girlfriend – the move was to allow Tarmey more time off the soap and reduce the number of episodes the character appeared in.
For many fans his character will be best remembered for his scenes with Liz Dawn who played on-screen wife, Vera Duckworth. Jack and Vera were for ever squabbling but it was an on-screen relationship that won over fans and no matter how much the duo argued they always remained together – or ended back together. Actress Liz Dawn decided to leave Coronation Street in 2008 and her character was killed off. It was speculated at the time that Bill Tarmey would depart with her but he decided to remain with the soap.
