BBC 6 MusicThe BBC’s doomed radio stations 6 Music and the Asian Network have been given a boost after winning several Sony Radio Awards. The station’s win of awards will give hope to campaigners hoping to save the two stations that the BBC will change their minds about closing them in planned cut-backs. The two stations will close by the end of 2011 under plans outlined by Mark Thompson, the director general of the BBC. However, campaigners are hoping to stop the planned closures and the BBC Trust has stated if feedback is overwhelmingly in support of the two stations it will reverse the decision of closure.

The campaigners will no doubt take comfort in the fact that BBC 6 Music and the Asian Network were among the winners of the Sony Radio Awards. Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish won Best Comedy Prize while Jarvis Cocker won the Rising Star award, voted by listeners, for 6 Music. The Asian Network meanwhile won Best Speech Programme for presenter Nihal. Other winners last night were Sir David Attenborough, named as speech broadcaster of the year, BBC Radio 5 Live was named UK station of the Year while Radio Four’s Today programme won Breakfast Show of the Year.
