Stephen Fry to front new language documentary

The actor, writer and comedian Stephen Fry has revealed he’ll be fronting a new BBC documentary series exploring language.

Stephen Fry has revealed to the Radio Times that he is to front a new documentary series for the BBC. Fry will present a five-party series exploring language for BBC Two. Fry described language as one of “many passions”. The new series will be called Planet Word and will include an interview with the invent or Pinyin, the phonetic version of Chinese.

Fry recently hit the headlines for his criticisms about the state of television and the lack at adult targeted programmes. The actor claimed that television had dumbed down and programmes like Doctor Who and Merlin were prime examples of this – however, it should be noted that Fry is a fan of Doctor Who. Indeed he was to pen an episode of the revived series in 2005 and again in 2006 but his other commitments prevented him from doing so. Last year his ITV drama series Kingdom was cancelled by ITV because of budget cut backs.
