American broadcaster The CW has been praised for its gay coverage through popular programmes such as Gossip Girl and 90210. The praise was part of a survey of prime-time programming by GLAAD, the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination, which rated The CW with the top bill for its representation of gay and lesbian characters – the broadcaster has been in second place for the past three years. The positive portrayal of gay issues and characters can be found through popular programming on the broadcaster such as Gossip Girl and it was recently announced that 90210 would see a male character come out as gay in the next season.
The survey by GLAAD rated MTV in second place with Fox rated adequate – however, the survey found that Fox would have performed better if some of its representations weren’t derogatory. Fox is home to the smash hit musical comedy series Glee which features gay characters amongst the principle cast. ABC had 26% while NBC had 13%. CBS though was the lowest of the main broadcasters in America with just 7%. On cable ABC Family, TNT, Showtime and HBO all received good grades.
A survey carried out in the UK revealed yesterday that there were not enough of positive portrayals of gay characters/issues on television. The survey criticised the lack of positive portrayals for young people to see on television and broadcaster the BBC came out worse of all from the criticisms. Soaps such as Emmerdale and Hollyoaks were praised for their coverage of gay issues but while BBC soap EastEnders currently has a high profile gay storyline the corporation was found to have had just 44 seconds worth of positive representation out of 120 hours of programming surveyed.
