EastEnders wins Best Soap at TV Choice Awards

 

EastEnders was named Best Soap at the TV Choice Awards while Emmerdale actor Danny Miller picked up two awards for his portrayal of gay teeen Aaron Livesy.

EastEnders was named the Best Soap at the TV Choice Awards. The BBC One soap beat rivals Coronation Street and Emmerdale to pick up the award and it comes as the soap enters one of the most dramatic weeks in its history. The departure of Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) from the soap will be marked with a huge and devastating fire which will destroy the Queen Vic pub and leave the fate of several other regulars in question. Viewers have been speculating for months over the fate of Peggy and other characters such as Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) who are also departing EastEnders.

Emmerdale picked up several TV Choice Awards with Danny Miller picking up Best Actor for his portrayal of gay-teen Aaron Livesy. Aaron’s storyline involving his struggle to accept his sexuality also won an award – the storyline has been widely praised by critics but missed out on recognition at the British Soap Awards earlier this year. Adam Thomas who plays Adam Barton was voted Best Newcomer while Coronation Street was given a special 50th anniversary award to mark the occasion.

Away from soaps and Doctor Who was named Best Family Drama by actress Karen Gillan, who plays companion Amy Pond, collecting the prize. Ashes to Ashes won Best Drama for its third and final season which aired on BBC One earlier this year while American musical comedy Glee was named Best New Drama. Finally Britain’s Got Talent beat the various other talent contests to win Best TV Talent Show.

The TV Choice awards were held at the Dorchester Hotel in London.
