Heartbeat actor calls for more drama

Heartbeat actor Joe McFadden has called on television bosses to produce more quality drama.

Heartbeat actor Joe McFadden has called on television bosses to produce more quality drama. The actor played PC Joe Mason in the 1960s drama which aired its final episode last night on ITV1. The series had been a popular fixture of the Sunday evening schedules for many years but declining ratings in recent years prompted ITV to cancel the series. Now the actor has called for bosses to concentrate more on drama and less on reality television.

Reality TV is so disposable. People want to watch drama more. There has to be a place for both, but we are not making as many of these great dramas now. I am looking forward to seeing what dramas are made with money that used to be spent on Heartbeat.” – Joe McFadden quoted in The Scotsman

A recent poll by the Radio Times agrees with McFadden’s comments about drama as it revealed viewers want to see more drama and comedy on television and less reality television. Friday evening saw the conclusion of Big Brother on Channel Four but there’s every chance it will move to Channel Five while there are doubts now hanging over next year’s series of The X Factor – so could the reality television bubble have burst? Probably not quite yet.
