Following the news that on Saturday ITV Granada had removed its iconic red ‘Granada TV’ rooftop sign due to its fittings rusting, today Quay Street staff tell us it ‘will return’ once its repaired.
Granada was a well known cinema chain, mainly in the south of England, before television but it’s the Manchester studios and television service that is still fondly remembered by ITV viewers.
The sign, placed on the roof over 50 years ago, became a landmark of the North West and at one time a regular sight on television screens in the region and beyond. Early on Saturday morning it unexpectedly started to be dismantled from the Granada office block and fans of classic television were soon in uproar, with the Facebook page for the regions commercial news show, Granada Reports, full of comments. Many not entirely convinced the sign was really suffering from ‘rust’.
An ITV Granada spokesperson said on Saturday, “During routine maintenance of the Quay Street building the roof signage and its fixtures were found to be extensively corroded. As a result, the signs have been taken down for health and safety reasons.”
Earlier this morning ATV Today sent our Manchester correspondent to Quay Street to take a look at the building. Maria Brabiner confirms that the ‘other’ Granada TV signs remain around the complex.
An ITV Granada member of staff told ATV Today, “The removal of the iconic lettering is not a permanent action. We can assure you that the signage will be restored to its rightful position once it has been cleaned up and repaired.”
Granada Television left the screens of the North West in 2002, when a national brand ‘ITV1’ was fully introduced. The sign in recent times however has continued to be seen daily as part of a skyline backdrop for the Granada Reports news show.
