Actor, writer and comedian Stephen Fry is to appear in the sequel to Guy Ritchie’s 2009 film, Sherlock Holmes. The actor revealed his role in the sequel to the box-office hit on The Danny Baker Show on BBC Radio 5 Live. Fry will play Mycroft Holmes – the brother of Arthur Conan-Doyle’s legendary Victorian sleuth. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law are expected to reprise their respective roles for the sequel with Geraldine James also returning as Holmes landlady, Mrs Hudson.
The untitled sequel, expected to be released in December 2011, is also due to star Naomi Rapace. Sherlock Holmes proved to be a box office hit but proved slightly controversial with some for its portrayal of the relationship between Watson and Holmes as homoerotic. Over the Summer the BBC launched their latest adaptation of the sleuth – Sherlock. The BBC series was adapted by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and was set in the present day with Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson. Sherlock was a ratings hit for the BBC with over 7 million viewers and the corporation has since commissioned a second series.
