Eddie Izzard is to head the cast of Sky One’s new adaptation of Treasure Island. The comedian and activist is to play pirate Long John Silver in Sky’s adaptation of the famous pirate novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. The period drama is a rarity of Sky which has so far concentrated on producing crime or fantasy dramas such as Thorne or its adaptation of several Terry Prachett novels like Hogfather. However, it does represent Sky’s plans to produce more home-grown drama, and comedy, as it invests more in original content.
Production on Treasure Island is due to begin next month in Ireland and Puerto Rico and it will as a two-part four hour drama on Sky One in 2012 – most likely around Christmas. While Treasure Island has been adapted for television and film several times – with comedy versions by The Muppets and even the Carry On team (in Carry on Christmas) – surprisingly it has been some time since a live-action version has been made for British television. In fact the last live-action adaptation of Treasure Island was back on the BBC in the 1970s.
With filming taking place on the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie there is likely to be a mini-revival in all things ‘pirate’ – which is what happened with the release of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The BBC have been developing there own pirate drama – for Saturday evenings along the same lines as Merlin, Robin Hood and Doctor Who – for some years now. However, the project has seemingly been stuck in development hell for most of that time possibly due to funding issues.
