The 90 minute episode saw the Edwardian drama reach the outbreak of World War One in 1914 with the foreshadowing of great changes about to take place. According to overnight ratings the first season finale of Downton Abbey was seen by 9.5 million viewers – it’s highest overnight figure so far. The drama has consistently pulled in over 8 million viewers over its 7 part run but last night’s finale figure represents its highest overnight performance.
