GleeActress Susan Sarandon has criticised GLAAD after the group rebuked Glee for using the word ‘tranny’ in a recent episode. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has previously praised the Fox television series for its LGBT representations and portrayals but took exception to Glee’s use of the word tranny. The word was used in a Rocky Horror themed episode by the character of Mike (Harry Shun Jr) who said his parents forced him to pull out of a role because they didn’t want him to look like a ‘tranny’. GLAAD criticised the use of the word within the episode and stated one of the other characters should have challenged it. Actress Susan Sarandon doesn’t agree however and has criticised the gay lobby group.

What should Glee have said? GLAAD is getting like PETA – way out of control. – Susan Sarandon.

GLAAD have stuck by their criticism of Glee stating ‘ The word ‘tra—y’ has become an easy punch line in popular culture and many still don’t realise that using the term is hurtful, dehumanizing and associated with violence’.
