Dominic West, perhaps best known for his role in the critically acclaimed American drama The Wire, is to star in a new BBC Drama. The new six-part drama for BBC Two will be set in the 1950s in a newsroom in the decade in which, following the broadcast of the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, television took off with big audiences. The Hour has been scripted by Abi Morgan and will also star Ben Whishaw and Romola Garai. The Hour has already been dubbed the BBC’s answer to Mad Men. Mad Men is an American drama set in 1960s New York in an advertising agency and has won fans on both sides of the Atlantic. The first four seasons of Mad Men have been shown in the UK on BBC Four with repeats on BBC Two.

In The Hour Dominic West will play anchor man Hector Madden while Ben Whishaw will play journalist Freddie Lyon and Romola Garai will play the show’s producer, Bel Rowley. The drama is part of BBC Two’s drive to increase its drama output on the channel as well as finding a returning series which, as far as UK produced drama goes, it currently lacks.
