True Blood actor Ryan Kwanten has praised his loyal gay fan base during an interview with the American gay/lesbian magazine, The Advocate. The actor plays Jason Stackhouse in the HBO vampire drama which has just finished its third series in America – a fourth has been ordered. True Blood, produced by Alan Ball, is based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris and features a number of gay/lesbian characters. True Blood has developed a large gay fan base as has actor Ryan Kwanten who praised his fans loyalty.
“They’ve always been very staunch supporters of me, The great thing is that it’s a loyal fan base – they’ll stick with you through thick and thin, and I like that. You can’t buy that kind of loyalty.” – Ryan Kwanten in The Advocate.
During the interview the Australian actor revealed his brother was openly gay and had come out at an early age.
“He’s a doctor, so he got every ounce of intelligence in the family,” he said. “He was probably about 18 when he came out, and I can wholeheartedly tell you that from the day that he did, he was a changed man for the better. The sheer beauty of who he is really came through.” – Ryan Kwanten in The Advocate.
In the same interview the actor also discussed the possibility of his True Blood character, Jason, exploring his sexuality in the fourth season. So far Jason has been portrayed as a womaniser – especially in the first series – but the drama isn’t afraid to tease the audience with ‘possible’ gay relationships. The opening episode of series three featured a scene between vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer) and bar-owner Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) feature in an overtly homo-erotic scene which was revealed to be a dream of Sam’s.
“I’m sure True Blood creator Alan Ball is concocting some road to take Jason down that he’s never been down before,” – Ryan Kwanten in The Advocate.
Fans of the Australian soap Home and Away will recognise Ryan Kwanten for his role of Vinnie Patterson. Kwanten appeared in the popular Australian soap as Vinnie between 1997 and 2002.
