Reports in America reveal that CBS has renewed its top-rated soap The Young and the Restless for a further three years. Deadline are reporting that daytime soap, the top-rated soap in America, has been renewed by CBS for a further three years meaning it’ll be on-air until at least 2014. Given The Young and the Restless top performance its renewal is not exactly a surprise although it has come ahead of time – its contract isn’t due to run out for a few months.
In recent years CBS has been axing soaps rather than renewing them culling Guiding Light and As The World Turns. Last year saw the departure of Guiding Light after 72 years on-air; starting out on radio before transferring over to television. September saw the finale of As The World Turns after 55 years on-air. However, while the soap genre is a struggling one in America with declining ratings affecting all the remaining ones there has been some good news. Just a few weeks ago NBC renewed Days of our Lives – its last remaining soap – for a further two years.
The Young and the Restless was launched in 1973 and was created by William J.Bell and Lee Phillip Bell. The two created sister soap The Bold and the Beautiful in the mid 1980s and the two series have featured many crossovers since then. While The Young and the Restless is the top-rated soap in America its sister The Bold and the Beautiful is the most watched daytime soap in the world. It has an estimated worldwide audience of 30 million viewers daily airing in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Netherlands and until recently the UK.
